What is Coaching? How is it different from Therapy?

Coaching and therapy both aim to help individuals improve their lives, but they do so in different ways and with different focuses.

Coaching

Coaching is typically future-focused and goal-oriented. Its primary aim is to help individuals achieve specific goals, improve performance, or make positive changes in their personal or professional lives. Coaches work with clients to enhance their strengths, overcome obstacles, and create action plans. Coaching is generally used by individuals or businesses who are looking to solve a specific and identified problem. (Career coaching, Relationship coaching, Financial coaching etc) It’s often suitable for people who are functioning well but want to reach new levels of success or satisfaction. Coaching relationships can be short-term or long-term, depending on the client’s goals and needs. Sessions might be weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Coaches come from various backgrounds and may (although, not required) have certifications from coaching organizations, but they do not need to have any formal training. Coaching is currently an unregulated field that does not require any specific training or licensure.

Therapy

Therapy (or psychotherapy) focuses on treating a specific mental health diagnosis, healing emotional, psychological, or behavioral issues. It aims to help individuals understand and work through problems such as anxiety, depression, or trauma.. Therapy often delves into past experiences and how they influence current behavior and emotions. Therapy is suitable for individuals dealing with diagnosable mental health issues, significant emotional distress, or life challenges. It can be beneficial for people who need support in managing psychological symptoms or resolving deep-seated issues. Therapy can be short-term or long-term, depending on the individual’s needs. Sessions are often weekly or biweekly, but the frequency and duration can vary. Therapists are licensed mental health professionals (e.g., psychologists, licensed counselors, social workers) with formal training in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. They adhere to ethical guidelines and standards for practice, as well as maintenance of requirements set forth by State licensure Boards. Things to know about Therapy: Insurance often provides Psychotherapy benefits to its members which means there may be little to no cost to the client. In order for a Therapist to bill your insurance company for services provided, they must provide a diagnosis for the client. The services provided must meet the criteria for “medical necessity” The Therapist is required to keep detailed clinical notes that can be audited and reviewed by the insurance company at their request. A mental health diagnosis is a part of your permanent medical records that can be reviewed by life insurance carriers when an individual applies for life insurance coverage. Insurance can dictate the frequency and duration of your treatment

Why Should I Choose a Coach Trained as a Therapist?

Currently, the coaching field is unregulated, allowing anyone to claim the title of “Coach.” Therapists often make excellent coaches because they bring several valuable skills to the table

Empathy and Active Listening

Therapists are trained to understand and validate their clients’ feelings and experiences. This ability helps them connect deeply with people, which is crucial in coaching to understand clients’ needs and goals.

Understanding of Human Behavior

Knowledge of psychological principles helps therapists identify patterns, set realistic goals, and provide growth strategies.

Problem-Solving Skills

Experienced in helping individuals navigate challenges and develop coping strategies.

Non-Judgmental Attitude

Creates a safe, comfortable space for clients to explore aspirations and barriers without fear of criticism.

Goal Setting and Accountability

Therapists are skilled in defining objectives and tracking progress.

Motivating Change

Therapists help clients initiate and sustain positive changes.
